According to The Washington Post, John Rumpel, a 75-year-old and the proprietor of Encore Motors of Melbourne, shared that his “entire family” was aboard the plane during the crash. He mentioned that his daughter, a two-year-old granddaughter, her nanny, and a pilot were among the individuals on board.
Mr. Rumpel identified the pilot as Jeff Hefner. Records show he had an airline pilot rating that qualified him to fly Boeing 737 jets, among other aircraft, and had a top-level medical certificate as recently as October. Authorities have not released the name of the nanny. Dan Newlin, an attorney in Florida, said in an email Monday that Hefner had flown for him in the past. Newlin described the pilot as a “highly accomplished and skilled Aviator” who was survived by his wife and three kids. This most recent crash’s early review is pointing towards the possible cause as a loss of cabin pressure. The FAA lost contact with the pilot only 15 minutes into the flight. Based on the FlightAware data we can see the plane never reached its planned altitude of 39,000 feet. Roughly at 33,000 feet it maintained that altitude at a high rate of speed over 500mph under autopilot. The Autopilot system seemed to be active and helped the craft reach its destination in Islip, New York. At that point it made a sharp 180 turn and headed back towards its departure point. Although this is consistent with only the most modern autopilot technology, it seems the plane was on autopilot since reaching pressurization, and some mishap caused it to lose the required cabin oxygen levels which may have caused pilot and passengers to get hypoxia and pass out.

While the company has expressed its ability to mitigate these losses next year, Wall Street has already rendered its opinion and the stock, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, dropped from its initial offering price of approximately $10 in July 2021 to about 25 cents at the most recent evaluations. To prevent delisting from the Exchange, a proposal for a reverse stock split has been put forth – a clear warning sign of failure. Forced to leverage the planes it owns, Wheels Up managed to accumulate a substantial cash reserve of $585 million by the end of 2022, but this amount diminished to $363 million by the end of March, and at the current burn rate of expenditure, the remaining cash reserves might only last until the end of this summer. Finally back to the home office after a wonderful tour of the Eastern Caribbean Islands we are greeted by the excitement of Formula One Racing arriving in Miami the weekend of May 5th to May 7th. When I had the career as an Automotive Dealership General Manager, I luckily had the opportunity to visit Monaco for Formula One Races, but now that I’m sort of retired, I get to see this exciting race event right in my own backyard in Miami. With the venue a short distance from both our apartment in Brickell or even shorter ride from our airplane hangar in Pembroke Pines, there is no way to ignore the excitement that is building in our neck of the woods. I thought it might be a good topic to cover this week and next as we near the race event weekend. This week I will cover the origins of the race, the path to becoming a Formula One driver, and the salary potentials. Feel free to comment if I miss anything or my my research or knowledge is not correct. Next week I will add more about this year’s event and some of the drama that unfolded in F1 earlier this year.
Formula One (F1) is the highest class of single-seater auto racing and has its origins in the European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 1930s. However, the modern Formula One World Championship as we know it today began in 1950. Before the establishment of the Formula One World Championship, there were various Grand Prix races held across Europe, with many countries organizing their own events. These races featured a mix of professional and amateur drivers, using a range of different car specifications. The term “formula” referred to the set of rules that all participants’ cars had to adhere to. In the late 1940s, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) decided to create a unified set of rules for these races and establish an official championship to determine the best driver and team each year. The first Formula One World Championship race took place at Silverstone, United Kingdom, on May 13, 1950. It was won by Giuseppe Farina, driving for the Alfa Romeo team. Over the years, Formula One has evolved significantly in terms of technology, regulations, and team structures. While the core principle of the sport remains the same – racing open-wheel single-seater cars on closed circuits – the details have changed dramatically. Today, Formula One is a global phenomenon, with races held on multiple continents and featuring some of the most technologically advanced racing cars in the world.

Tomorrow is our first stop on our 10-day Eastern Caribbean cruise, the beautiful city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. Located on the northern coast of the island, Puerto Plata is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history. When we arrive at port, we will be greeted by the warm sun, crystal-clear waters, and the lively rhythms of merengue music. I’m sure it will be an unforgettable experience. One of the highlights of our visit will be to explore the historic Fort San Felipe, which was built in the 16th century to protect the city from pirates and foreign invaders. The fort is now a museum, where we will learn about the history of the island and its many battles.
The next stop will be the Cathedral of San Felipe, a historic Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Puerto Plata. It is one of the oldest and most important religious buildings in the country. The construction of the cathedral began in 1502, shortly after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. It was completed in 1552, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in the New World. The cathedral has undergone several renovations and restorations over the centuries, but it still retains much of its original colonial-era architecture. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with beautiful stained glass windows, ornate woodwork, and intricate carvings. The cathedral also houses several important religious relics, including a statue of the Virgin Mary that is believed to have miraculous powers.
Then it will be on to the Aurora Cigar Museum, also known as the Museo del Tabaco, which s located in Santiago de los Caballeros, which is the second-largest city in the Dominican Republic and is considered the heart of the country’s cigar industry. The museum is dedicated to showcasing the history and craftsmanship of cigar-making, which is an important part of Dominican culture. We will take a guided tour of the facility, which includes a walk through the museum’s exhibits that feature artifacts, tools, and photographs that highlight the history of the cigar industry in the Dominican Republic. The museum also features a replica of a traditional Dominican cigar factory, where we will observe the different stages of the cigar-making process, from tobacco leaf selection and sorting to rolling and packaging. In addition to the exhibits, the Aurora Cigar Museum also offers cigar-making workshops and tasting sessions, where visitors can learn about the different types of cigars and how to properly enjoy them. These workshops are led by expert cigar-makers who share their knowledge and expertise with visitors. At the end of the tour, we can purchase cigars from the on-site gift shop, which offers a variety of premium cigars from the Aurora brand, as well as other popular Dominican brands for our home humidor.
Our next stop is the Del Oro Chocolate Factory, a popular tourist attraction also located in Puerto Plata. The factory is dedicated to producing high-quality, organic chocolate using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients. We will be taking a guided tour of the facility including a walk through the chocolate-making process. The tour begins with an introduction to the history of chocolate and the origins of cocoa beans. We will observe the various stages of chocolate production, from the roasting and grinding of the cocoa beans to the molding and packaging of the finished product. One of the highlights of the tour is the opportunity to taste the chocolate at different stages of the production process, from raw cocoa beans to finished chocolate bars – yum!. We can also sample a variety of chocolate products made on-site, including chocolate bars, truffles, and other chocolate-based treats. In addition to the tour, the Del Oro Chocolate Factory also offers workshops where visitors can learn to make their own chocolate creations, under the guidance of experienced chocolatiers. The Del Oro Chocolate Factory is a must-visit destination for chocolate lovers like us and anyone interested in learning about the traditional methods of chocolate production. We also like the factory’s commitment to organic and locally sourced ingredients, as well as its dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of cocoa production in the Dominican Republic, making it a unique and worthwhile experience.
The final stop will be the Ron Macorix Factory just in case we need something to go along with the Cigars and the Chocolate. The factory is dedicated to producing high-quality, premium rum using traditional methods and locally sourced ingredients. We will take a guided tour of the facility, which includes a walk through the rum-making process. The tour begins with an introduction to the history of rum and the origins of sugar cane, the key ingredient used in rum production. We can then observe the various stages of rum production, from the fermentation and distillation of the sugar cane juice to the aging and blending of the finished product. We will get the chance to taste the different types of rum produced at the factory, including dark and light rum, as well as flavored varieties. I think you can also sample a variety of rum-based cocktails made on-site, using the factory’s premium rum as a base. The Ron Macorix Factory also offers workshops where visitors can learn to make their own rum cocktails and traditional Dominican dishes, under the guidance of experienced chefs and bartenders.
