Gion Matsuri, without a doubt the grandest festival in Kyoto and throughout Japan, holds a rich historical significance. Its origins can be traced back to the year 839, a time marked by a devastating plague. In their earnest attempts to appease the deities, the residents of Kyoto offered a child messenger as a solemn offering.
In the present day, a young boy is carefully selected to grace an opulent parade float, among many others, where he remains suspended without his feet touching the ground for four days leading up to the culmination of the first procession on July 17th. The second grand parade takes place on July 24th, but the entire month is permeated with exuberance, all-night celebrations, and a delectable array of street food.
Unquestionably, Gion Matsuri attracts an immense influx of visitors to Kyoto, making it one of the busiest periods to explore the city. To fully immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of both the festival and the city itself, it is advisable to make your travel arrangements several months in advance, as hotel prices may experience a slight increase during this time.

However, the allure of remarkable music extends beyond the main venue, as the festival also offers the iHeartRadio Daytime Village—an auxiliary location dedicated to showcasing promising emerging artists.

Outside Lands is Northern California’s premiere music festival, and I can personally say that it’s an absolute blast! It’s a local favorite among San Franciscans, and there really is a special and relaxing festival vibe for these three days in Golden Gate Park. Every year, we eagerly anticipate the Hyundai Miami Beach Air Show which takes place during Memorial Day Weekend. This time around, we had initially planned to enjoy the show from our boat while cruising along the water. However, due to our responsibility of babysitting our energetic grandog, Benji the Frenchie, and his grumpy uncle, Zeke the Puggle, we had to reconsider. Having the dogs onboard with a group of aviation enthusiasts would likely result in a chaotic day of cleaning up after them and praying that we don’t have to test out the doggie life vests.
Instead, we’ve decided to watch the aerial events from the comfort of our high-rise balcony in Brickell. Since the show spans two days, I’ll have the opportunity to assess the view and schedule on Saturday while my wife is at work. Then, on Sunday, we’ll invite our aviation enthusiast friends over to join us. As the designated cook, I’ll be whipping up a delightful holiday weekend menu consisting of make-your-own nachos, succulent mojo pork with homemade tortillas, and flavorful Korean chicken thighs. With the boat captain duties out of the picture, we can all relax and indulge in some refreshing draft beer and Katie’s famous yet dangerous coconut cocktails.
