International Civil Aviation Day, Dec 7th, In 1901 something was accomplished that hadn’t happened in the history of mankind, a man flew upon a glider and covered a respectable distance in a manmade device that was not held aloft by lighter-than-air gas. The skepticism that greeted this event was profound, with people all over the world saying the Wright Brothers were more liars than fliers, a claim that would be refuted by a demonstration of what would be the most important aeronautics event in the world. International Civil Aviation Day celebrates the science, art, and sport of aviation that grew out of this initial glide, and the men and women who push the frontiers of it today.

Loi Krathong, Nov 27th, is one of the most picturesque and most romantic festivals of Thailand, falling on the night of full moon of the 12th lunar month. The moon appears exceptionally bright, beautiful and full. Young couples draped in traditional finery gather around lakes, rivers and canals to pay respects to the goddess of water by launching of the Krathong into the water.

Krathong is a lotus shaped container made of banana leaves, containing a candle, incense sticks, flower and coins. People also make their way to these water bodies where they can float Krathongs and make their wishes. It is said that people congregate for floating away their sins and miseries and hope for a better future for their families. At the same people light lanterns which rise into the night sky (Yi Peng) which makes for one of the most amazing sights you will ever see.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Oct 25th-29th, is the greatest boat show on the seven seas. Owned by the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) and produced by Informa Markets, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) is recognized as the largest in-water boat show in the world. Located steps from the beach in sunny South Florida, FLIBS spans nearly 90 acres across three million square feet of exhibit space that is connected by an intricate network of water and ground transportation services. The five-day show attracted over 100,000 attendees and 1,000 exhibitors representing 52 countries with more than 1,300 boats on display in 2022. Products range from superyachts to sunglasses and everything in between.

In their earnest attempts to appease the deities, the residents of Kyoto offered a child messenger as a solemn offering. In the present day, a young boy is carefully selected to grace an opulent parade float, among many others, where he remains suspended without his feet touching the ground for four days leading up to the culmination of the first procession on July 17th. The second grand parade takes place on July 24th, but the entire month is permeated with exuberance, all-night celebrations, and a delectable array of street food. Unquestionably, Gion Matsuri attracts an immense influx of visitors to Kyoto, making it one of the busiest periods to explore the city. To fully immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of both the festival and the city itself, it is advisable to make your travel arrangements several months in advance, as hotel prices may experience a slight increase during this time.

Wimbeldon, July 3-16, Recognized as “The Lawn Tennis Championships,” The Wimbledon Championships stand as the venerable and perhaps most esteemed tournament in the world of tennis. Medellin compensates for occasional overcast skies with a magnificent 10-day tribute to nature known as the Feria de Flores, or Festival of the Flowers. Prepare to be enchanted by a dazzling display of locally cultivated, intricately designed floral arrangements and floats, taking center stage in the highly anticipated Parade of Silleteros. While it may seem difficult to judge these stunning creations, the participants eagerly vie for the title of the most remarkable arrangement. With numerous categories available for each display to compete in, there’s even a special category dedicated to the talented young participants, ensuring a delightful experience for all ages.

Lollapalooza, August 3-6, Lollapalooza, the grandest and most extensive summer festival in Chicago, unites the music industry’s top stars annually! Set amidst the stunning Grant Park, against the backdrop of Chicago’s majestic skyline, this four-day extravaganza promises to be an unforgettable highlight of your summer. Outside Lands Music Festival, August 11-13, Outside Lands is Northern California’s premiere music festival, and I can personally say that it’s an absolute blast! It’s a local favorite among San Franciscans, and there really is a special and relaxing festival vibe for these three days in Golden Gate Park. While tickets, food, and drink costs are rather high (like everything in SF), it’s an incredible event that you should definitely check out at least once! 

Dutch Grand Prix, August 24-27, Circuit Zandvoort is known as a real ‘old school’ track with fast, banked and challenging corners, shaped by the natural dunes. With a circuit length of 4.3 kilometres, it ranks among the shorter tracks on the F1 calendar. Hardly anywhere else, drivers zoom past the race fans this often! The short pit lane allows for three-stop strategies. Action guaranteed.

US Open, August 28-September 10, The United States Open tennis tournament, commonly known as the U.S. Open, represents the fourth and culminating event among the prestigious Grand Slam tournaments. Held annually between August and September, this tournament showcases the finest talents in the world of tennis. The captivating matches take place at Flushing Meadows, where players strive for victory on the Decoturf II surface, composed of acrylic cement. While the tournament’s present surface is Decoturf II, it’s worth noting that the U.S. Open has seen its fair share of transitions, having been contested on both grass and clay courts in the past (for more information on tennis court surfaces). The U.S. Open serves as a thrilling conclusion to the Grand Slam season, capturing the attention of tennis enthusiasts worldwide and crowning champions who etch their names in the annals of tennis history.

National Championship Air Races, September 13-17, Every day commences and concludes with the timeless cycle of a sunrise and a sunset. This eternal rhythm mirrors the National Championship Air Races, which commenced their inaugural sunrise in Reno back in 1964. However, the sun will finally set on this cherished event later this year, after 59 years of unwavering constancy.
