Promptly dispatched from Joint Base Andrews, the F-16s were deployed to intercept the aircraft. Defense officials have clarified that the fighter jets were not responsible for the crash of the Cessna.

Identified as a Model 560 Citation V, the Cessna met with tragedy near the George Washington National Forest close to Montebello, Virginia, around 3:23 p.m. Regrettably, there were no survivors discovered at the crash site. He mentioned that his daughter, a two-year-old granddaughter, her nanny, and a pilot were among the individuals on board.

Obviously, there will be an extensive review conducted by both the NTSB and the FAA regarding the crash. We have three categories for aircraft we consider for clients private jet travels. Green Level is a complete passing grade with few known issues and/or crashes. Then back on December 18th, 2018 four souls were lost in a 560 Vs with probable cause listed as “the pilot’s loss of airplane control due to spatial disorientation during initial climb in instrument meteorological conditions.”

This most recent crash’s early review is pointing towards the possible cause as a loss of cabin pressure. The FAA lost contact with the pilot only 15 minutes into the flight. Based on the FlightAware data we can see the plane never reached its planned altitude of 39,000 feet. Roughly at 33,000 feet it maintained that altitude at a high rate of speed over 500mph under autopilot. The Autopilot system seemed to be active and helped the craft reach its destination in Islip, New York. At that point it made a sharp 180 turn and headed back towards its departure point. Although this is consistent with only the most modern autopilot technology, it seems the plane was on autopilot since reaching pressurization, and some mishap caused it to lose the required cabin oxygen levels which may have caused pilot and passengers to get hypoxia and pass out.

Every year, we eagerly anticipate the Hyundai Miami Beach Air Show which takes place during Memorial Day Weekend. Is private aviation Overweight or Underweight? Recent stories related to the losses over at Wheels Up has made me ponder this question. Wheels Up, intended to be the next success story following Kenny Dichter’s triumphs in the private aircraft charter industry, the company took an unexpected turn as he steps down amidst mounting losses and a plummeting stock value. The company has struggled to overcome its substantial losses, which amounted to an astonishing $555 million last year. While the company has expressed its ability to mitigate these losses next year, Wall Street has already rendered its opinion and the stock, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, dropped from its initial offering price of approximately $10 in July 2021 to about 25 cents at the most recent evaluations. To prevent delisting from the Exchange, a proposal for a reverse stock split has been put forth – a clear warning sign of failure. Forced to leverage the planes it owns, Wheels Up managed to accumulate a substantial cash reserve of $585 million by the end of 2022, but this amount diminished to $363 million by the end of March, and at the current burn rate of expenditure, the remaining cash reserves might only last until the end of this summer. Also keep in mind those losses include over $76 million taken in PPP loans!

They use the term, “underweight” which refers to a recommendation or opinion provided by financial analysts regarding a specific stock or asset. When a stock is labeled as “underweight,” it suggests that the analyst believes the investor should allocate a smaller portion of their portfolio to that particular stock or asset compared to its weight in a benchmark index or relative to other investments. In other words, it indicates that the stock or asset is expected to underperform its peers or the broader market. This recommendation is typically based on negative expectations for the company’s financial performance, industry trends, or other relevant factors. The options for Wheels Up to consider include seeking additional investment from their partner Delta Airlines, exploring a return to the private sector and fundraising, or considering a strategic partnership. Please note that if private equity or another acquiring entity were to become involved, a prerequisite may be to reorganize through bankruptcy. Given their significant fleet of private business aircraft, the potential divestment of some or all of these planes and their entry into the used plane market would destroy the pre-owned plane market. Many of these aircrafts were manufactured by Textron’s Aircraft Division, which produces the Cessna and Beechcraft line of planes predominantly used by Wheels Up. The sudden availability of a large selection of King Air and Citation models in the pre-owned market could adversely affect the demand for newer and more expensive aircraft in this segment.

Red Bull Racing – Miami Grand Prix 2023

Verstappen – Perez – Verstappen – Perez, Red Bull racing’s best drivers have dominated Formula One Racing this year leading up to this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing is Red hot and really has its “wings” coming into the race this weekend at Hard Rock Stadium. I don’t know if the drama with his longtime performance coach, Angela Cullen, has derailed Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes Benz F1 racing team, but he does seem a bit off the pudding. I read all the social media “it’s not you, it’s me” breakup conversation, but I feel there is way more to that story so I kind of don’t see him rattling the cages of the drivers and teams above him in the F1 standings, at least not this weekend. Sergio Perez is driving very aggressively lately as a man with a mission to win it all, and its been all Max and Checo this year in Formula One.

Wanna Make a Bet?

The Miami Grand Prix is the next stop on the Formula One World Championship circuit, with Max Verstappen favored to win, having already claimed victory in the Bahrain and Australian Grand Prix this season. At DraftKings Sportsbook, Verstappen’s odds to win are set at -250, while Sergio Perez, who won the Saudi Arabian and Azerbaijan Grand Prix, follows closely behind at +330 on the odds boards. The race is scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 7 at the Miami International Autodrome, where Verstappen emerged victorious in 2022. Verstappen’s final time last year was 1:34:24.258, with Charles Leclerc finishing as the runner-up. Leclerc and Fernando Alonso share odds of +1400, with Alonso having placed in the top four in every Grand Prix this season. Overall, I think its time for the Red Bull team to get its wings clipped a bit and expect a great upset victory for Leclerc and the team at F1 Ferrari.

Best View of the Race Action

In my humble opinion the T1 Grandstand North and East are the ultimate spots to witness the first corner chaos. But the excitement doesn’t stop there, as the tight corner following the long straight provides ample opportunity for thrilling overtakes, making it a hotspot for on-track moves during the 2022 race, including Verstappen’s pass on Leclerc for the lead and Mick Schumacher’s misjudged move on Vettel. Fans in these grandstands can also catch a glimpse of the pitlane exit and witness the nail-biting conclusions to race strategy battles. It’s no surprise that these grandstands are among the most popular in Miami. Although each has its own pros and cons, the views from both are significantly different, yet each a good choice.

For live music enthusiasts, the weekend offers so many concerts to choose from. At E11EVEN Miami, you can catch shows by Tiesto, Rick Ross, and DeadMau5. Formula One Racing In Miami

Finally back to the home office after a wonderful tour of the Eastern Caribbean Islands we are greeted by the excitement of Formula One Racing arriving in Miami the weekend of May 5th to May 7th. When I had the career as an Automotive Dealership General Manager, I luckily had the opportunity to visit Monaco for Formula One Races, but now that I’m sort of retired, I get to see this exciting race event right in my own backyard in Miami. With the venue a short distance from both our apartment in Brickell or even shorter ride from our airplane hangar in Pembroke Pines, there is no way to ignore the excitement that is building in our neck of the woods. I thought it might be a good topic to cover this week and next as we near the race event weekend. This week I will cover the origins of the race, the path to becoming a Formula One driver, and the salary potentials. Feel free to comment if I miss anything or my my research or knowledge is not correct. Next week I will add more about this year’s event and some of the drama that unfolded in F1 earlier this year.

Formula One Racing – The Origin

Formula One (F1) is the highest class of single-seater auto racing and has its origins in the European Grand Prix motor racing of the 1920s and 1930s. However, the modern Formula One World Championship as we know it today began in 1950. Before the establishment of the Formula One World Championship, there were various Grand Prix races held across Europe, with many countries organizing their own events. These races featured a mix of professional and amateur drivers, using a range of different car specifications. The term “formula” referred to the set of rules that all participants’ cars had to adhere to. In the late 1940s, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) decided to create a unified set of rules for these races and establish an official championship to determine the best driver and team each year. The first Formula One World Championship race took place at Silverstone, United Kingdom, on May 13, 1950. It was won by Giuseppe Farina, driving for the Alfa Romeo team. Over the years, Formula One has evolved significantly in terms of technology, regulations, and team structures. While the core principle of the sport remains the same – racing open-wheel single-seater cars on closed circuits – the details have changed dramatically. Today, Formula One is a global phenomenon, with races held on multiple continents and featuring some of the most technologically advanced racing cars in the world.

Humble Beginnings of a Formula One Driver

Becoming a Formula One race car driver involves a combination of talent, dedication, and strategic career planning. Here are the general steps one might follow on the path to becoming an F1 driver:

Start karting at a young age: Most professional race car drivers start their careers in karting. This helps to develop essential driving skills and build a strong foundation in racing. It’s common for drivers to begin karting as early as 6-8 years old.
Progress through the ranks: After gaining experience in karting, move on to more advanced single-seater categories like Formula 4, Formula 3, or regional equivalents. These series provide a more structured environment to develop racing skills and compete against other talented drivers.

Caribbean Islands St. John’s, St. Kitts, and St. Maarten

St. John’s Antigua

All the Caribbean Islands we visited on the trip so far were great, but I think we enjoyed St. John’s Antigua, St. Kitts, and Philipsburg St. Maarten the most. On day six of our 10 day Eastern Caribbean cruise we found ourselves on the beautiful white beaches of St. John’s. St. John’s is the capital city of Antigua and Barbuda, a small Caribbean island nation located in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. It is situated on the northwest coast of Antigua and is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and historical landmarks. One of the most popular attractions in St. John’s is its stunning white sand beaches, such as Dickenson Bay and Runaway Bay. These beaches offer crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. St. John’s is also home to several historical landmarks, including St. John’s Cathedral, which was built in the 19th century and is one of the largest churches in the Caribbean. The city’s other notable landmarks include the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, which showcases the history and culture of the island nation, and the colorful Redcliffe Quay, which is lined with colonial-era buildings that now house restaurants, bars, and shops. For those interested in shopping, St. John’s offers a variety of markets and shopping districts, including the Heritage Quay Shopping Complex and the Public Market, where visitors can find local crafts, spices, and souvenirs. We found St. John’s to be a beautiful and vibrant city with a rich history and culture. It offers something for everyone, from stunning beaches and outdoor activities to historical landmarks and cultural attractions.

St. Kitts

We then took a journey on day seven on a 96 foot boat from Port Zante along the beautiful St. Kitts coastline. We were delighted to listen to the steel drum music aboard ship as well as the pristine beach we arrived at later in the day. We got a great day in while basking under the Caribbean sun and drinking Ting to our hearts delight. Ting is a carbonated grapefruit-flavored soft drink that is popular in the Caribbean. It is made with real grapefruit juice and has a slightly tart and sweet taste. Add a little Caribbean Rum, and its a perfect beach drink. Ting originated in Jamaica and is now available in many parts of the world, often found in Caribbean restaurants.

On day eight our Island tour ended with a much anticipated trip to Philipsburg St. Maarten. St. Maarten, also known as St. Martin, is a small island nation located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea. The island is divided into two parts, with the northern portion belonging to the French and the southern portion belonging to the Dutch. One of the most popular attractions in St. Maarten is its beautiful beaches. The island boasts more than 37 beaches, each with its own unique features, from secluded coves to bustling beach bars. Popular beaches on the Dutch side include Mullet Bay Beach, Maho Beach, and Great Bay Beach, while popular French-side beaches include Orient Bay Beach, Grand Case Beach, and Anse Marcel Beach. St. Maarten is also known for its duty-free shopping, with numerous shops and boutiques offering a wide range of items, including jewelry, electronics, and souvenirs. Popular shopping areas on the island include Front Street in Philipsburg, the capital of the Dutch side, and Marigot Market on the French side. Other popular activities on the island include water sports, such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and jet skiing, as well as exploring the island’s historical and cultural landmarks, such as the 18th-century Fort Amsterdam on the Dutch side and the historic district of Marigot on the French side.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

For this trip we just had to visit the famous Maho Beach due to our love of everything aviation. Maho Beach is a popular beach located on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. What makes Maho Beach so unique and famous is its location at the end of the runway of the nearby Princess Juliana International Airport. The beach is situated just a few meters away from the airport fence, making it a popular spot for tourists to watch airplanes land and take off overhead. Due to the beach’s proximity to the runway, planes can be seen flying low overhead and are often close enough to touch, which makes for a truly exhilarating experience. Some visitors even enjoy the thrill of being blasted by the jet blast as planes take off, although it is important to note that this can be dangerous and has resulted in injuries in the past so you need to be somewhat careful. Luckily there are several restaurants and bars nearby, where you can grab a bite to eat and an adult beverage while watching the planes overhead at a safer distance. For us it was a one-of-a-kind experience and a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts. Overall, anyone looking for a unique beach experience on St. Maarten, Maho Beach is the place to go.
